Millennials Are Cool, Too

A few weeks ago, I wrote about the surprising popularity of Baby Boomers as guest-hosts of Saturday Night Live recently. This week, I thought I’d share with you an observation about another demographic segment, the much-discussed Millennial Generation, sometimes called Gen Y.

My wife and I had the opportunity to attend the student awards luncheon at Indiana University South Bend recently and were seated with some of the marketing award winners and their families. Both of us were taken by the enthusiasm of these students, in particular as they described a major group project due in a few days. We subsequently heard about the all-nighters they put into the completion of the project, which brought back recollections of our own bouts with sleep deprivation in college more than a few years ago. Yesterday, their prof sent us this following YouTube video, which demonstrates some of their ideas for marketing initiatives on behalf of an international organization called Charity Water.

Much has been written about the good and bad characteristics of the Millennials by people far more knowledgeable on the subject than yours truly. But when I see work like this, I get excited about the future of the marketing profession. These kids are passionate, team-oriented, insightful – and most of all, they possess an enthusiasm that is absolutely contagious. With experience, their work will become more strategic and polished than what you see on this video. My only hope is that these real-world refinements don’t polish away the raw beauty of their enthusiasm and fresh perspective. I have a great deal of confidence these kids are not going to let that happen.
