And the Winner is...

“The Social Network”.

At Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards, this movie was up against four other fantastic films for Best Motion Picture – Drama and won. Beating out “The Fighter”, “Black Swan”, “Inception” and “The King’s Speech” for Best Picture (plus winning three other major awards), the number of wins for this movie says a lot about our society.

Social media has weaved itself into everything: marketing, Hollywood, people’s everyday lives and interactions. It has completely impacted and changed our world. Who would have thought a few years back that in 2010 the most compelling drama would be about someone developing a website? This story is obviously something that is no longer just interesting to “geeks” but to the public at large.

Of course, the Oscars will say it all (nominations aren’t released until January 25), but I believe it is safe to say that social networking as a medium is not going away any time soon. New trends are going to come and current ones are going to fade, but the social aspect of new technologies is going to continue to expand and increase in popularity. The question is: Are you ready?

Social media is an ongoing learning process. You have to do your research, understand the vehicles available and experiment with the ones that fit your overall strategy. Don’t be afraid to take some risks. Like any student, you are not going to know all of the answers and you might not pass all of the tests. But if you keep the needs and wants of your target audience in mind, and you’re not afraid to be different and unique, that’s where you’ll find your success.
