Turning Obstacles into Opportunities

Having been an entrepreneur for nearly 40 years, I can truthfully say that business is very simple but not very easy. By observing the many colleagues and friends I’ve made along the way, I believe what separates successful individuals from the rest is their ability to transform obstacles into stepping stones for growth.

Curious about how these successful individuals make it all seem so effortless, I set out to uncover the common qualities they all possess.

Three key traits immediately caught my attention.
1.    Perception – Reframe Your Perspective
2.    Action – Take Decisive Steps
3.    Will – Cultivate Resilience and Determination

Perception
The Greek philosopher Epictetus said, “It’s not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters.” Do we see an obstacle as “bad” or do we view it as something temporary for us to overcome? By reframing it as an opportunity for growth, our mindset opens to new possibilities and solutions that we previously couldn’t see.

Action
Now that we see the challenge from a higher level, it’s time to act. Build your plan. Create a timeline. Line up necessary resources. The great motivational coach and speaker Tony Robbins says, “The path to success is to take massive, determined action.”

Will
Problems and setbacks don’t appear overnight and won’t be solved that way. It requires persistence and mental fortitude, qualities anyone can develop and hone over time.

Obstacles are just a part of the journey. Each challenge we overcome builds resilience and provides us with skills that will propel us to new heights of personal and professional success.
